Material Witness

Bello writes about the objects people keep after a loss, and somehow builds from them a history of a city. A wedding ring left in a pawnshop drawer. A bus ticket never used. A photograph folded until the crease becomes the subject. Material Witness is reportage with the nerve of a novel — prose stripped to the load-bearing sentence.

Each chapter takes one object and follows it backward. The method could feel gimmicky. It never does, because Bello refuses to sentimentalise. She is interested in what things cost, who held them, and what was traded to keep them. The city that emerges is not romantic. It is specific, tired, and still standing.

The sentences are short without being clipped. They carry weight the way a good ledger does — every entry justified. You finish a chapter and find yourself looking at your own shelves differently. That is the measure of the book: it changes the room you read it in.
